Green Cleaning, Is it Worth the Cost?

Green Cleaning cost so much!  Why is it worth it?  The hippies had it figured out in the early 60’s, peace, love, and respect for mother earth, but how does that relate to today’s culture.  It seems everywhere you look, companies are promoting “going green”.  But, is this just a popular slogan, or are there real benefits to going green.

This is not a science blog, so I’ll leave all the serious number crunching to those techie blogs and look at it from my perspective.  The world’s population is exploding, literally, and with this explosion there also comes an explosion in consumption.  It’s anti-capitalism to preach about leading a conservative lifestyle, but how long can we continue to deplete our natural resources before we run out.  Oooopps, stepping back off the soap box.  Other writes have expressed it far better than I, but you get the point.

Cleaning is something every household, does.  Well, at least I hope they do.  And as such, each household gets the opportunity to choose what products they use.  The EPA can tell you about.” Excessive phosphate blooms”

But  who has a clue what that means.  However, it’s just common sense.  Do you really  want unnecessary chemicals around your family.  It may take year before the science labs determine what all the common chemical do during a life time of exposure.

Tell me what you think about it.  Are you willing to pay extra, and if so how much to use cleaners that pass the “green” test even if it means it cost a little more?

How to tackle mold in the bathroom

Growing in the crevices and cracks of your bathroom, mold is not something desirable to have around. Let’s save that for the science experiments.

Anytime mold is mentioned, it’s not uncommon to think of the deadly type of mold, but unless you have had flooding or leaky pipes you are probably dealing with a nuisance mold. However if the mold covers a large area, call in the professional for safety.

To make a mold killing cleaning solution, you can mix 1 cup of bleach with a gallon of water. Clean using standard cleaning methods. You might use an old toothbrush to get into the cracks and crevices. For stubborn areas it may take several applications.

Once your remove the mold, make sure that you have solved any moisture problems that led to the mold in the first place. Mold needs moisture to thrive.

It was once fashionable to have carpeted bathrooms. However modern trends lead away from this because the carpet does hold moisture and other unpleasant odors in the bathroom. You might also want to invest in a bathroom fan to help circulate the air and remove moisture.

Once you have addressed your bathroom, you might want to look at other areas of your house, such as the basement or the laundry room. You might need to put fans or dehumidifiers in those areas as well.

I hope these tips help you out. If you are in the Austin area and don’t won’t to tackle your mold problem, visit my website at Austin Maid Service.

Cleaning/Saving Tips

Sock it to me...

Have you ever had a sock come up missing? Over time, you can end up with a bunch of socks without their mates. Instead of discarding the socks, they make excellent cleaning rags. It’s easy to just slip one of your hand and use it as a dust cloth, and since you were going to through them away anyway, it’s convenient to use them for the messy jobs. Just do your cleaning then toss them away.

Empty shoe boxes…

These can be great organizational tools. Although not as efficient as clear containers, simply applying a label make them great for storing objects in a tidy matter.

Ice tray organizers

Reusing old ice trays to organize jewelry or other small objects save the trays from finding their ways to the landfill. They stack nicely and can be put inside a dresser drawer or closet to hide them away nicely.

Plastic Grocery Bags

These are great when used as liners for small trash cans. If you are like us, you will never run out. They seem to multiply on every shopping trip. They are also great for picking up the small items that blow or otherwise stray into the yard. Just a quick flip to the trash bin and you are done.

Vinegar and water...

Great for windows with a minimum of streaking. Go ahead and know off those dust bunnies without fear of smearing the glass.
